Tuesday Teaching

Why I Teach

Am I a superhero? No I just play one in my classroom, or as it is known at my school…the Batcave!

I don’t really consider myself to be a superhero, teaching for me is definitely a calling though. You may be thinking I am crazy or maybe you are like me and totally understand when I say I LOVE teaching middle school students!  My position is such that I teach 6th-8th grade. Having my students for 3 years allows me to develop great connections with them.

Teaching science completely fits my style of teaching (hands on, project and inquiry based). Teaching math has allowed me to relate to my students through my own experiences. Helping them understand that even if math doesn’t come easy to them, I will do everything in my power to help them learn as long as they are willing to do the work.

I took the long way around to getting my education degree so I am late to the game. I am in my fourth year of teaching. It is the most mentally draining thing I have ever done and the most rewarding. A lot of the people I have looked up to have been teachers I have had and who made a difference in my life. My hope is that I will have that same impact on my students. My goal along with educating them is to make sure they know I care about all aspects of their life, not just what happens in my classroom.

I enjoy a lot of the things my students enjoy, like Star Wars and Stranger Things.  Relating to my students on their level helps to form a better connection. The hope is that the connection we build will lead to a bigger impact in their learning and a true understanding that they matter to me.

Like I said at the start, I don’t believe that I am a superhero. I am just one teacher hoping to make a difference in my students lives. Hoping they know when they go out into the world they have at least one person who is rooting for them to be the best version of themselves they can be!
